AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department is looking for several people connected to an overnight officer-involved shooting in downtown Austin.
- Happened at 7th street and I-35
- At least two people are hurt
- 50 officers were working the area
The incident began with a minor crash near the intersection of Neches and 7th street just before 3 a.m. Sunday. Police say a dark colored Chevy Monte Carlo hit a dark Maserati Levante SUV.
The vehicles headed eastbound to the intersection of 7th street and I-35. Officials say two people got out of the Maserati and walked to the driver’s side of the Chevy. One person leaned into the window and began punching someone inside the car. Someone began firing gunshots from inside the car. The two men ran back to the SUV; one appeared to be injured from a gunshot wound.
Several officers ran towards the incident. The injured person pulled a gun from his waist and began firing at officers. Four officers fired back at the men as they were getting back into the SUV. The Mazerati and the Chevy both sped off.
While police were looking for suspects, someone flagged officers down near 11th street and I-35. Their car had been hit in the gunfire, as they were trying to pull away from the initial shooting. One person suffered minor injuries.
50 officers were working the intersection of 7th street and I-35 in response to a shooting that happened in the area Saturday morning.
Austin Police Chief Brian Manley says Sunday’s shooting was captured on APD’s H.A.L.O. cameras.
“What you can see on this video is as this gunfire rings out and this dangerous situation plays out, as everyone is running away, the brave men and women of the Austin Police Department ran towards that gunfire, in fact putting themselves directly in the line of fire in an attempt to put a stop to this threat,” said Manley.
Police are still looking for the suspects. They say the dark Maserati Levante should have collision damage on the driver side rear quarter panel. The dark Chevy Monet Carlo has light colored racing stripes down the hood and center of the vehicle.
