SAN MARCOS, Texas – The San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter is still looking to find homes for some of the 176 animals seized in an animal cruelty case in Buda last year.

  • Animals still looking for homes
  • Seized from a property in Buda in November

"We obviously never know how many animals to expect," said Kara Montiel, Animal Services Manager. "The largest seizure we had prior to this one was approximately 30 animals."

On November 1, 2018, the Hays County Sheriff’s Office was called to a property in Buda for a call reporting inhumane animal care. A total of 161 cats and 15 dogs were removed from the home.

Montiel says she's proud with how her staff handled the process, but the ordeal did take an emotional toll too.

"You think you've seen it all until you've seen the next one. You don't ever get used to it but you learn how to cope with it," said Montiel.

The animals were sent to the San Marcos shelter with the majority of them needing life-saving treatments. Some of the cats died after they were exposed to Histoplasmosis, but several others survived.

The shelter is now reviewing how they handled the situation and preparing for the future.

"We were able to have an off site location to house half of the animals until we could dwindle the numbers down, but this could happen at any time, in any city and we do need a location we can depend on," she said.
