SAN ANTONIO — Hundreds of billboards in San Antonio could soon be removed if a new ordinance passes.

  • About 300 billboards may be removed

Thursday, Mayor Ron Nirenberg announced a proposal between the city and Clear Channel Outdoor. The outdoor advertising company owns most of the billboards along roadways in San Antonio.

According to the proposal, Clear Channel Outdoor will pay to remove about 300 billboards in exchange for two-sided digital signs. The current city code prevents double-sided digital billboards.

If the proposal passes, Clear Channel Outdoor will be allowed to install 13 digital signs on the backs of existing billboards.

"There will be much less clutter coming from signs across our community. It's a great win-win. Again, it’s the most significant removal of signs in our city's history," said Nirenberg.

The public is encouraged to take a community survey regarding the billboards on the city's website. San Antonio City Council is expected to vote on the proposal in April.
