KYLE, Texas – Kids in Kyle are preparing to play roller hockey this summer in a place inspired by an 11-year-old with a big wish.

  • Groundbreaking for 20,000 square-foot roller rink
  • Inspired by Make-A-Wish request from Kyle boy
  • Ash Pavilion expected to open Summer 2019

The city's building a full-size roller hockey rink at Gregg-Clarke Park after being approached by Ash Crane and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Officials broke ground Monday, which coincided with Crane's birthday. On hand were his friends, local leaders and Ringo, the mascot of the Texas Stars hockey team.

"I feel loved, and I feel cared for," Crane said.

Originally from Colorado Springs, Colorado, Crane's parents say his first word was "hockey." They moved to Texas a few years ago, so he could be treated for hypoplastic left heart syndrome. It is a condition discovered by doctors at birth.

"A lot of the neighborhood kids have learned to play hockey in the driveway," said Lisa Crane, Ash's mother. "It will be great to actually have a spot where they can really play hockey, so they can really get the full experience."

Kyle City Manager Scott Sellers says Phase 1 of the project is already financed, but Phase 2 is still about $50,000 short.

"We are very optimistic that we are going to get there," he said. "But definitely the fundraising is still alive and well."

Sellers expects the 20,000-square-foot Ash Pavilion to be available for use this summer.
