AUSTIN, Texas -- The southern border may not be any closer to getting a wall but it is getting more troops.

• Already about 2,200 guardsmen at the border
• Pentagon officials say the department is still trying to decide how many troops to send

The Department of Defense has approved a request from the Department of Homeland Security for more military support on the southwest border.

Pentagon officials say the department is still trying to decide how many troops to send and whether they will be active-duty or National Guard forces. The approval is not related to President Trump's threat to declare a national emergency to divert military resources to the border.
