AUSTIN, Texas - A baby boy and his mom are said to be doing fine after the infant was delivered Tuesday morning at an Austin intersection.

ATCEMS officials said they delivered the baby on the side of the road Tuesday morning in Southeast Travis County.

It was not a typical Tuesday morning for ATCEMS clinical specialists Jon Kalinowski and Hank Moore. They got the call at 7:44 a.m. at Highway 71 and Kellam Road, which is just southeast of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

A woman in her mid-twenties was in active labor, so Kalinowski and Moore took her to the back of their ambulance to begin delivery. They said they check for health prior to delivery, test blood sugar levels, and determine if there was pre-natal care and if this was the mother’s first delivery.

“You think through all the worse possible outcomes and hope for the best, thankfully, we got on scene. It was a very fast process. The mom delivered within 12 minutes of us arriving on scene,” Moore said.

“It was an uncomplicated delivery, it is exactly what you would have wanted,” Kalinowski said.

EMS officials said deliveries in the field are rare, but their medics are trained for it. This was actually not the first time Kalinowski and Moore responded to a call like this. One time the duo delivered a baby on a balcony.

“Usually we see people at the tail end, but to bring a life in, that’s super exciting,” Kalinowski said.
