SAN ANTONIO – A man facing three counts of attempted capital murder of a police officer has died in custody.

Fernando Macias, 61, was taken in custody on March 8 after a day-long SWAT standoff. The incident began when police were called to Saddle Trail Drive for a welfare check of an 80-year-old woman.

Once they arrived, officers were immediately greeted with gunfire. According to police, Macias was shooting at the deputies as they attempted to approach the house.

Macias was eventually injured when authorities fired back at him. After nearly 24 hours, a SWAT team took the suspect into custody, and found the woman dead inside the home.

After receiving treatment in the hospital, Macias was taken to the Bexar County Jail. On December 16 at 11:20 p.m. Macias was pronounced dead after medical complications. His exact cause of death is currently being determined by the medical examiner.
