AUSTIN, Texas — Hundreds of people placed Christmas wreaths on graves at the Texas State Cemetery Saturday to honor servicemen and women who have passed away.

  • Volunteers participate in Wreaths Across American event
  • More than 3,000 wreaths were placed on veterans graves

This is the third year Wreaths Across America has held this event in Austin.

The Texas State Cemetery is one of 1,500 other cemeteries across the country that paid respects to veterans.

Volunteers placed 3,100 wreaths on all graves in the cemetery, which included fallen soldiers, veterans, and other dignitaries.

Gold star families were also honored at the event.

"It's a very special honor for our son and all of the veterans to receive wreaths to remember their service to this country," Marcy Voss said.

Marcy's son, Captain Mark "Tyler" Voss was killed overseas, while serving in the Air Force. The Voss family received a wreath in honor of their son and got to place a wreath on Chris Kyle's grave.

"We have followed his story. We know and respect what he has done and it's just a huge honor," said Marcy.

The wreaths will be picked up after Christmas and recycled.
