AUSTIN, Texas — Austin police have removed a credit card skimmer from a southwest Austin gas station.

  • Skimmers found at Escarpment Exxon
  • Found at pump 7
  • Police removed device

The Texas Department of Agriculture says inspectors found the illegal device Wednesday at Escarpment Exxon on pump 7. The gas station is located at 6109 W. William Cannon Dr.

Thieves use skimmers to steal credit card information.

Tips to avoid skimmers:

  • Use pump closest to gas station in sight of employees
  • Check security tape of gas pump
  • Torn security tape could indicate pump has been opened
  • Pay with cash when you can
  • Save the receipt and monitor bank statements
  • Drivers who think they might have been skimmed are asked to call 1-800-TELL-TDA.
