AUSTIN, Texas — Austin ISD is weighing a round of deep budget cuts to offset its third consecutive deficit.

  • AISD weighs budget cut options
  • May close 12 schools
  • Board expected to approved budget next summer

The preliminary report shows 12 schools could be on the chopping block, but they aren't sure which ones will be cut.

The budget cut report lists about 81 options, totaling a savings of $55 million for the district.

AISD said many factors will go into decisions on school closings.

"How do we cluster schools that made sense regionally that made sense transportation- wise, and looking at the age and conditions of the facilities because ultimately the goal is to put kids in higher academic performing environments, but better physical environments too," Nicole Conley Johnson with AISD said.

The board is expected to approved the budget next summer.
