TEXAS - Over the last decade, nearly 90 Texas children died in day care facilities due to abuse or neglect. That's according to a year-long investigation by the Austin American-Statesman

The paper also reports that more than 450 were sexually abused over that same time period.

Many of the child care centers operating in Texas are doing so under the radar, the Statesman reported. But a legislature-approved investigative unit formed to crack down on illegal centers was disbanded after just four years.

The report has led the governor and lawmakers to pledge to address day care safety issues during the upcoming legislative session.
