AUSTIN, Texas — Come Election Day, Austin voters will vote on two little-known items, Propositions J and K.

Propositions J and K are the last items on the election ballot, and both also happen to be the most controversial.

Proposition J deals with the city's land development code. It proposes to put any changes or revisions on Austin's zoning laws before voters. This came about after CodeNEXT, which proposed to rewrite the city's 30-year-old land development code, was nixed in August.

Should a similar plan come up in the future, if Prop J is approved, it means the plan would be on hold until the next council election.

The other little-known item, Proposition K, calls for a third party to conduct audits on the city's budget and operations. Currently, those tasks are handled by the city auditor.

How it ended up on the ballot makes it even more controversial. The city claims the group that funded Prop K is breaking the law, but the group responded by suing the city, claiming that the ballot language approved by council was biased.
