BEXAR COUNTY, Texas -- An off-duty Bexar County Sheriff’s Deputy was arrested by the San Antonio Police Department at 2 a.m. and charged with driving while intoxicated.

Deputy Diana Barrera, 51, is a 12 year veteran with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, and was assigned to the Detention Bureau. She has been on unpaid administrative leave since Aug. 24, 2018 for an unrelated incident,

Barrera was fired from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office in accordance with Civil Service Rules for the current DWI arrest, a continuing pattern of conduct that seriously impairs job effectiveness, and for the detrimental effect it brings to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.

The Internal Affairs Department with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting a separate but concurrent administrative investigation into the incident, pending further criminal investigation of the case by the San Antonio Police Department.

Sheriff Javier Salazar released the following statement:

“I have made my stance clear on misconduct, that it will be dealt with as swiftly and severely as possible. To maintain the integrity of this organization, I have personally terminated this employee for a pattern of illegal behavior”.
