AUSTIN, Texas – An Austinite brewed his way to a silver medal at a worldwide beer championship.

Brewer Stephen Wagner created the Austin brewery’s first Gose-style beer, Uncle Billy’s Salty Old Soul Gose.

The Uncle Billy’s beer received high ratings at the Tastings.com 2018 World Beer Championship. The beer was rated “highly recommended” with a score of 89 out of 100 points.

Wagner has been the head brewer at Uncle Billy’s Brewery since 2017.

Gose-style beer received its name for the ancient flavor from Germany. The beer is known for its deep golden hues with a slightly salty and sour taste.

Uncle Billy’s beer takes the German tradition and adds a pinch of Himalayan pink salt to unleash a citrusy taste.

Since 2006, Uncle Billy’s Brewery has paid homage to William Barton, or Uncle Billy, whose land in the 1830s included Barton Springs.
