AUSTIN, Texas — Austin police have arrested a woman in last week’s fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a man.

Cierra Powell, 24, is charged with murder in connection with the hit-and-run and shooting that killed Jason Aranda, 36, in southeast Austin on Thursday, according to a police arrest affidavit filed Saturday.

The incident happened at the intersection of East Oltorf Street and Huntwick Drive at 3:09 p.m. June 21. Aranda was pronounced dead at the scene.

Multiple witnesses at the scene said they saw a woman hit a pedestrian intentionally and then flee the scene in a maroon sedan. The affidavit states that another 911 caller told them that Aranda knew the driver.

Detectives learned that Aranda had been in an earlier disturbance with his ex-girlfriend and her friend, Powell. He left the scene of the argument and drove onto Huntwick Drive.

According to police, his ex-girlfriend, driving a black vehicle, and Cierra Powell, driving a maroon Lexus, followed him. Aranda came to a stop at the intersection of E. Oltorf and Huntwick and exited his vehicle. The ex-girlfriend drove around Aranda and turned onto E. Oltorf. Powell drove toward Aranda striking him with her vehicle. After striking him, Powell then shot Aranda and drove away.

Through several investigative leads, the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force was able to locate Powell’s vehicle at her residence. She was arrested, and a pistol with a fired cartridge casing found in her car.

Once in custody, Powell told police that Aranda attempted to attack her in her car, so she shot him in self-defense, the affidavit said.

Aranda's death has been ruled a homicide by gunshot wound after an autopsy was performed by the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Aranda's 13-year-old son witnessed his father being killed, the documents said.

Powell is being held in the Travis County Jail, and her bond is set at $150,000.
