AUSTIN, Texas -- Austin police on Thursday said a pedestrian was killed in the east part of town in what was likely an intentional hit-and-run collision.
The crash was reported at 3:09 p.m. in the area of E. Oltorf Street and Huntwick Drive.
Police at the scene said witnesses reported a white woman behind the wheel of a red sedan struck the victim. The victim, a Hispanic man in his 40s, was declared deceased at 3:20 p.m. at the scene.
Based on witness information, police believe the driver and the victim knew one another. The driver fled, but police have identified a suspect and were in the process of obtaining a warrant.
Witnesses said the noise the collision created was so loud that many of them initially mistook it for a gunshot.
