Acting director of Austin’s parks and recreation department, Kimberly McNeeley, released a memorandum on Friday to Mayor Steve Adler and Austin City Council asking for a postponement of a Feb. 15 agenda item calling for discussion and possible action regarding city-owned site options for a Major League Soccer stadium in Austin.

McNeeley’s request comes after the agenda item was already pushed to mid-February from mid-December.

In the memo, McNeeley requested more time to gather information and produce further analysis on the eight sites, which include five possible stadium sites.

“It is staff’s intention to request a postponement without a definitive future council date,” McNeeley’s Friday memo says.

“Upon consensus between the suggested City of Austin properties and the Precourt Sports Ventures property analysis, city staff will commence with a robust community engagement."

“It will be at that time city staff can select an appropriate council date.”

McNeeley noted the community engagement process will take an estimated 3 months.

Council is expected to vote on the postponement during its Feb. 15 meeting.

Last Friday, Precourt Sports Ventures announced it would no longer pursue Butler Shores Metropolitan Park after several council members urged the city manager to remove public parkland as a possible location for a Major League Soccer stadium.

Guerrero Park and McKalla Place in north Austin are considered the two most attractive remaining options.

Statement From Precourt Sports Ventures

In response to today’s City of Austin memo:

Precourt Sports Ventures has been anticipating a postponement of the Feb. 15 agenda item since Council Member Kitchen pulled her resolution.

The contents of the memo are consistent with the recent planning discussions, and we are continuing to finish our assessment on the remaining recommended sites. As we’ve narrowed down potential sites, we’ve identified numerous factors that need to be analyzed to make the best decision for both the community and the soccer club.

The planning and process continues for MLS2ATX and we are looking forward to getting back on the city council agenda as soon as Precourt Sports Ventures and the City of Austin are ready.
