WORLDWIDE — The first full moon of 2018 will be a supermoon on New Year's Day.

A supermoon occurs when the moon becomes full on the same day it's closest to Earth.

The January full moon is traditionally called the Full Wolf Moon in the Northern Hemisphere, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac.

It's actually No. 2 in a series of three supermoons that will be appearing — The first occurred on Dec. 3, 2017,and the other will make an appearance the last day of January.

And according to NASA, No. 3 will feature a lunar eclipse.

The second full moon in a single month is referred to as a blue moon, and they occur about every two and a half years, NASA notes.
