AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Department of Transportation has big plans for I-35 in the Austin area.

On Monday, Sen. Kirk Watson announced a plan to add toll lanes.

The project is called Capital Express, and would add two managed express lanes in each direction on I-35.

Those lanes would span from Farm to Market Road 1431 in Round Rock to State Highway 45 Southeast near Buda.

The plan also includes potentially moving the upper decks between Martin Luther King and Airport boulevards.

Watson says we only get one shot to improve mobility.

"I still firmly believe that adding managed express lanes to I-35 is the smartest way to increase capacity and mobility in the corridors,” said Watson.

TXDOT says before the new project can begin, it will conduct an ongoing environmental study and take into account public input from previous I-35 meetings.
