NATIONWIDE — Feeling healthy starts with being healthy and being healthy starts with eating healthy.

This National School Lunch Week, districts across Central Texas are making sure students have access to nutritious options.

Today, school lunches must offer:

  • ¾ cup of vegetables with every lunch
  • One cup of 1% or fat-free milk
  • One ½ cup serving of fruit daily
  • Entrees must include whole grains and lean protein

According to the White House, the National School Lunch Program is a partnership between Federal, State, and local governments working together to facilitate the health and development of our nation's children. Since its inception more than 70 years ago, millions of students have received low-cost or free meals and learned lifelong healthy eating habits.

Today, the National School Lunch Program serves more than 31 million students every school day, at nearly 100,000 schools and residential child-care institutions across the nation.
