NATIONWIDE — Texas Attorney Gen. Ken Paxton is leading a 10-state coalition that wants President Donald Trump to phase out DACA — the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival program.

In a statement, Paxton called the federal program "unlawful."

DACA provides permits to about a million undocumented immigrants giving them legal protection to live and work in the country.

In a letter, the coalition urged the Secretary of Homeland Security to rescind a recent memorandum that keeps the program in effect.

The AG's want the department to stop issuing or renewing DACA permits.

The request does not ask the federal government to remove any immigrant currently covered by DACA.

It also does not ask the Trump Administration to rescind DACA permits that have already been issued.

However, denying permit holders a renewal would still amount to a loss of protection under the law.
