AUSTIN, Texas -- Despite warnings from Central Health, Austin leaders decided to move forward exploring new Capitol View Corridors that span into East Austin.

City staff will explore four southern corridors on the map first. The Council will revisit the northern corridor in two weeks, which cuts right through Central Health's property.

The health district wants to replace UMC Brackenridge after it's vacated this year. More than 8,000 stakeholders have helped craft the vision for the new development, which includes several office towers and a market in the middle of the project.

Central Health officials said the two-week delay will limit their ability to provide health care to low income families.

"Any effect on the process to keep Central Health's development moving forward has an effect on that indigent care," said Delia Garza, with Austin City Council District 2.

If Central Health is limited by a capitol view corridor, leaders say they'll have to increase taxes for all Travis County residents or cut services to make up for the lost lease revenue.
