  • The Memorial Day Click It or Ticket campaign is taking place May 19 to June 1

  • The annual campaign is part of the Governor's Highway Safety Program's efforts to increase seat belt safety awareness and enforcement

  • Officials say 158 unbelted passenger and driver deaths have already been reported this year across the state

The statewide campaign from Governor’s Highway Safety Program, kicked off May 19 and runs through June 1.

The annual campaign focusses on public outreach and increased enforcement of the N.C. Seat Belt Law to help keep drivers safe during the busy holiday and upcoming summer months.

“Never hesitate to buckle your seat belt — it could be the difference between life and death,” Mark Ezzell, director of the Governor’s Highway Safety Program, said in a release. “It’s too risky to take that chance.”

Almost 500 drivers in North Carolina died in car crashes in 2023 because of unbuckled seat belts, according to the state’s 2023 Traffic Crash Facts report.

Officials said 158 unbelted passenger and driver deaths have already been reported this year.
