GENESEO, N.Y. -- The Geneseo Central School District has notified parents it is looking into a suspected case of the mumps.
The district sent a letter home to families urging any student who thinks he or she may have contracted the virus to stay home and be tested.
Over a dozen students were confirmed to have contracted the virus at nearby SUNY Geneseo dating back to late 2016.
SUNY Geneseo has said all students have since recovered and the campus is clear of any cases.
Mumps is a highly contagious viral disease that causes a person's glands to swell. It usually runs its course in about two weeks, and can generally be prevented with the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine.
Students attending school, childcare or college in New York State are required by law to have the vaccine or an exemption to it.
