From 3D-printing human organs to robotic bartenders, Time Warner Cable News’ Adam Balkin takes us back to the TechCrunch Disrupt conference for Hardware Day. He filed the following report.

The final day of the TechCrunch Disrupt conference is usually gadget day - the day startups making new hardware show off their wares. On the medical front, there are things like the BioBots 3D printer that prints using human cells. Right now, it is used primarily for pharmaceutical testing but could be the first step in printing full human organs.

“All our bodies are made out of both cells and this other material that holds all the cells together and that other material is called collagen. And so what we do is we take that collagen and we’ve developed this process that allows the collagen to make 3D structures out of it," explains Ricardo Solorzano of BioBots.

There are also some startups aimed at kids. MakerBloks fit together with magnets on their sides in order to help teach kids about circuits and electronics.

“We teach them how to create sound, create light, play with resistors and actually build real electronic circuits, but we still use the same electronic symbols that they’ll see when older. So if they are really passionate about electronics and get into soldering and real components, those are the same symbols they’re going to see in schematics," says Francois Poirier of MakerBloks.

File this under toys for adults: the Somabar robotic, app-controlled, bartender for your home.

“We have our proprietary Somabar pods, which are containers. So you just load that up with all your mixers and alcohol - vodka, whiskey, cranberry juice, etc. - and then when you plug it in the machine, the machine actually knows what alcohol you’ve plugged in, so then it’ll indicate you can make a Madras or a Cape Codder or any other drinks you have the capability of making from those ingredients,” says Dylan Purcell of Somabar.

Developers say it is programmed to make around 300 different cocktails and can typically make around 50 before you will need to refill the containers.
