SEFFNER, Fla. — Greater Brandon Meals on Wheels is having trouble filling the need in the community this year.
Through the program, 17 neighborhood churches take turns to cook and deliver meals. But within the last year, two of the churches have left the Greater Brandon Meals on Wheels program.
The group’s President said it has left a void.
“Right now, on Tuesday we have some clients who don’t get a meal and so that hurts our hearts,” said Greater Brandon Meals on Wheels President Dave MacEwen.
Dennis Mitchell and his wife are two clients who continue to receive meals. Mitchell said it really helps.
“Because we usually eat just one meal a day here and it usually has to be microwaved and it’s hard for me to do because of my COPD,” Mitchell said. “Any kind of exertion elevates my breathing problem.”
While the Mitchell’s are receiving meals, MacEwen said there are 30 people who are not being served on Tuesdays. MacEwen said they don’t have enough neighborhood churches to help.
“We’re really looking for churches who will step up and see that we have food insecurity in our community and there are people with real needs,” MacEwen said.
Greater Brandon Meals on Wheels serves homebound resident in Brandon, Valrico and Seffner. The nonprofit runs solely through donations and community support.
