TAMPA, Fla. — The accolades are coming fast and furious for Tampa Parks and Recreation.

Just days after receiving a National Gold Medal Award from the American Academy of Park and Recreation Administration, the city department has earned reaccreditation through the National Recreation and Park Association’s Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies.

What You Need To Know

  • Tampa Parks & Recreation has been reaccredited by the National Recreation & Park Association

  • The agency also won a prestigious national award

  • Fewer than 200 Parks agencies nationwide are accredited

That’s right — first a NGMA from AAPRA, and now the NRPA’s CAPRA.

(Say that five times fast.)

"Tampa residents already know their parks and recreation facilities are second to none," said Tampa Mayor Jane Castor in a release announcing the bona fides. "That's why thousands of Tampa families take part in activities in our facilities every year.”

Accreditation is a real feather in the department’s cap. The commission offers the only nationwide accreditation for such agencies, and fewer than 200 across this great country of ours have earned it. CAPRA first accredited Tampa Parks & Rec in 2011; it was the 100th agency to receive the honor.

"Our team of leaders and staff continually exemplify the highest of standards in our daily mission to provide and preserve quality parks and recreation opportunities for all," said Tampa Parks and Recreation Director Sherisha Hills of the distinction.

The department’s American Academy of Park and Recreation Administration win came in the category of Excellence in Parks and Recreation Management. Tampa Parks and Recreation oversees 194 parks within the city limits, comprising 3,226 acres of parkland and more than 300 miles of trails.
