UPDATE: On Tuesday, Hillsborough County Public Schools announced that 8,400 students are now quarantined or isolated, along with 307 employees.

According to the district, there are a total of 213,491 students enrolled and 23,596 staff members employed.

TAMPA — Hillsborough County Public Schools says 5,599 students and 316 school employees are currently in isolation or quarantine, so the school board will hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday.

Isolation refers to individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19, while quarantine refers to those who have had close contact with a positive case. 

The meeting will be at 1 p.m. at the School Board Auditorium at 901 E. Kennedy Boulevard in Tampa.

School leaders will discuss best practices to limit the spread of the virus, and that may include mandatory face coverings for all students and staff.

The county recently announced that masks will be required but that parents can opt their children out of following the guideline.

The board will allow for one hour of public comment at Wednesday's meeting.
