The Tampa Police Department has launched social media pages in Spanish to better connect with the city’s Hispanic community.

What You Need To Know

  • Tampa PD launches Spanish language social media

  • Handle on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram is @PoliciaDeTampa

  • Goal is to better connect with the community

The Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram all use the handle – @PoliciaDeTampa.

“It’s so important to be able to communicate directly to the Spanish community, and one of the ways is to provide information in their language,” Detective Rose Angelakopoulos, TPD’s Hispanic liaison, explained.

Nearly 30% of Tampa’s population speak Spanish as a first language.

TPD created the pages to help keep the community safer and better informed.

“Having the ability to create pages that are going to share information that’s going to help the community thrive and be safe – and be able to understand what’s going on so they can be better informed about the decisions that they make – is essential,” said Luz Randolph with the Hispanic Services Council.

The police department hopes the Spanish language pages will help foster trust among officers and the Hispanic community.

“Whenever you talk to someone in their native language they just feel a little more comfort and that they can trust you,” Angelakopoulos said.
