The Tampa Greyhound Track FEMA vaccination site will be equipped to give 2000 shots per day.
The site is setup as a walk-up site, not a drive-through site.
Robert Samaan is Regional Director for FEMA, and says all four federal vaccination sites, including Tampa's, will help increase the number of vaccines for those living in communities lacking in access.
"The goal of establishing this joint federal pilot site is to expand the rate of vaccinations in the Tampa area in an equitable manner, with a focus on communities with a high risk of exposure and infection."
Those eligible for vaccines at the federal sites opening today include seniors 65 and older, front-line health care workers, and as of today, police, firefighters, and school district employees 50 years and up.
The state is now allowing those deemed "extremely vulnerable" to coronavirus vaccinations as well, but it requires a letter signed by a doctor.
In addition to the federal vaccination sites, the federal government will also operate two mobile vaccination units out of the Greyhound Track.
The mobile units will get deeper into communities lacking access to the vaccine.
The mobile sites will be available March 3-6 at the Larry Sanderss Sports Complex, from March 7-10 at Hillsborough Community College's Brandon Campus, and between March 3-10 at Lake Maude Park in Winter Haven.
