HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — The stockpile of personal protection equipment for Hillsborough County Schools got a big boost Monday from Humana and the Hillsborough Education Foundation.

They teamed up to deliver more than 200,000 masks to local schools, ensuring all students and staff have face coverings as they prepare to return to classes amid a coronavirus pandemic.

District officials said they are expecting to pay an additional $7 million-$9  million a month for PPE supplies, and the budget already was tight. So, community donations are really needed right now, they said.

Many of the Education Foundation’s efforts are focused on getting supplies to Title I schools, officials said.

“The district has over 60 percent of their students qualify for reduced and free lunch and so if that is the case, that was before the pandemic so we know that need is even greater now,” Hillsborough Education Foundation Chief Executive Officer Kim Jowell said. “And and if they’re worried about putting food on the table, they can’t buy those school supplies.”

Hillsborough School officials said the district is prepared, with more than 1 million masks, as well as cleaning and safety supplies, in its warehouse ready to go.
