TAMPA, Fla. — Online learning has arrived for more than 200,000 students enrolled in the Hillsborough County School District.

Schools have been shutdown for a week because of the COVID-19 pandemic but online learning begins Monday.

New SDHC Superintendent Addison Davis says after the district's "Set Up for Success Week" the district is ready to handle the challenge, and asks parents to make sure kids are getting plenty of breaks throughout the day as they learn from home.

"Create a schedule for your learner.  Make sure there is structured time everyday where they are interacting with their teachers, interacting with their assignments.  We also want to make sure they aren't there looking at a screen all day, everyday."

District employees spent the past week ironing out kinks in the online learning system that reared their head last week.

The district's main online learning platform, Edsby, was flooded with traffic last Monday.  It crashed for a number of students as they tried getting online.  The district says Edsby increased server capacity last week and the problem should be resolved for this week.

After a survey of parents last week, the district says it was roughly 20,000 devices short for students who were in need of laptops to learn from home. 

The district ordered an additional 40,000 devices so students that still don't have them can work with their local schools this week to get them.

And the district last week expanded its Grab and Go Meal Program for students that would normally be eating breakfast and lunch at school.  

Starting today, 147 schools will be participating in the Grab and Go Meal Program across all of Hillsborough County.
