ST. LOUIS — Lisa Ann Walter, who plays a teacher on ABC’s hit series, “Abbott Elementary,” will perform her new stand-up show this weekend at the Helium Comedy Club.

While Walter’s career involves a 10-year stint in stand-up comedy, it also spans across television, film and stage.

Besides her character, Melissa Schemmenti, on “Abbott,” Walter is known for her roles in feature films such as "The Parent Trap," "Bruce Almighty," "Shall We Dance," "War of the Worlds," and "Killers."

Walter is no stranger to the Gateway to the West as she previously performed at a nightclub, and enjoyed the people and the food when she was in town last.

“I have such fond memories of being in St. Louis last time because the people were incredible. The barbecue was good, if not better than the people,” Walter told Spectrum News.

This time, she is excited to try this original dessert she saw on Instagram.

“The ooey gooey butter cake, that’s right in my algorithm, baby,” Walter said. “They sent me three things on Instagram: dogs, babies and cake.”

She told Spectrum News that her new stand-up show will feature jokes on topics that make her blood boil, dating, superstitions and more.

“What you can expect is to laugh,” she said.

“I just always think that standup is funny complaining. It’s basically talking about all the stuff that bugs most of us in a way that you can relate to and go, ‘Yeah, I do that too,’ or ‘Yeah, we used to do that when I was a kid.’ ”

Having a funny moment with a live audience is one aspect Walter enjoys about performing stand-up.

“Me getting to be in the room with you and living in the moment and there’s nothing like live stand-up to do that,” she said.

One superstitious topic she has joked about is who came up with seven years of bad luck after breaking a mirror.

“I think a lot of those things came up because moms just didn’t want to clean up the house,” Walter said. “It’s really hard to clean up broken glass, so somebody attached bad luck to it.”

Walter will perform at the Helium Comedy Club Friday, April 18, and Saturday, April 19.
