AUSTIN, Texas — Freight-not! The self-driving tractor-trailers are hitting the Texas highways this month using technology by Aurora are finally here.
Following delays, Aurora Innovation, a Pittsburgh-based self-driving tech company, will launch its driverless semis, called the Aurora Driver, in the Lone Star State.
Aurora’s current routes are Dallas to Houston and Fort Worth to El Paso.
The driverless semitrailers are no stranger to the Texas highways as they’ve been active since 2021, but with a person in the cab. But now, one of its semi trucks is losing its operator this month.
The Aurora Driver is trained by expert drivers, real-world data and robust simulation, and is designed to operate safely on its intended route, while learning and improving over time, according to Aurora’s website.
According to the company’s 2025 safety report, the Aurora Driver typically drives 65 mph on highways, increasing to 75 mph when needed.
