On In Focus, we’re taking an in-depth look at food insecurity and homelessness. As we celebrate the holiday season there are many issues plaguing the state and local families. According to Feeding Texas, 1 in 8 Texans experience food insecurity - including about 1.4 million Texas households and nearly 4 million individuals. Food banks and other nonprofits are working to fill the gap, but many say surging food prices are hindering their efforts. Higher food prices means that some families will get smaller servings or nothing at all. We spoke to Dallas City Council member Cara Mendelsohn is among the city leaders working to address food insecurity. We also talk with staff from Caritas of Austin about their effort to help people experiencing homelessness. The nonprofit receives a portion of the proceeds from Austin’s Thundercloud Subs Turkey Trot. Then, we head over to Dallas for the YMCA Turkey Trot. It supports the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas Community Health programs for children, adults, and families, providing them access to a healthy lifestyle.
