Dr. Cindy Prins with the University of Florida's College of Public Health and Health Professions says it reflects what's been happening for a while now.
"We started to plateau, but I think, unfortunately, it is really a true rise in cases," said Prins.
Not only that -- Florida seems to be following a reported nationwide trend of younger people making up more of the new cases. State data shows the median age of total cases is 40. The highest daily median age listed for the past two weeks is 38.
"That lowering of age is something that I was looking at, as well. I would say part of what we're seeing is some of our older residents are getting vaccinated, so they may be less likely to get infected at this point," said Prins. "I know that our younger people are not necessarily as vulnerable to the effects of COVID-19, but that's not true across the board. We've certainly seen situations where people become very, very ill."
And Prins says with so much still unknown about the progression of long COVID, it's important for young people to continue taking precautions.
