DAYTON, Ohio — Sienna Allen led all scorers with 17 points, and Portsmouth won its first state title 53-38 over Creston Norwayne in the OHSAA Division V girls’ basketball state championship game at UD Arena on Saturday.
Portsmouth (27-1) claimed the first-ever Division V state championship after the OHSAA expanded to seven divisions before this school year. The Trojans also became the first Scioto County program to be girls basketball state champion.
“I think we made the right decision on talking about it for years,” Portsmouth head coach Amy Hughes said. “Reaching for it, striving for it. Doing all the hard work that it takes along the way to accomplish the goal of a state championship, and the nine girls absolutely put in the work, had the right attitudes, had the right toughness, played the right defense, and really, really, really just got it done.”
An 8-0 run inside the first two minutes of the second half sparked by a pair of Creston Norwayne’s 24 turnovers propelled Portsmouth ahead 37-17 prompting the Bobcats to call a timeout.
The Trojans continued to stretch their lead and didn’t let Creston Norwayne (25-4) within 14 points for the rest of the second half.
Keke Woods and Hayven Carter each added 11 points and Daysha Reid scored 10.
“It means a lot, especially doing it with this type of people. Like, I love them,” Daysha Reid said. “We’ve been playing with each other for a while, so this has always been our dream. We’ve been talking about it since I’d been in the fifth grade.”
The loss snapped Creston Norwayne’s 19-game winning streak, a school record. The Bobcats finished with 25 wins, also best in school history.
Ava Maibach led Creston Norwayne with 15 points.
“We’re excited for what kind of an impact this is going to have on the youth in our community,” Creston Norwayne head coach Jake Shoup said. “It’s easy for young girls in our community to look at these four along with our other players and see role models that they want to be and to be excited about basketball and the future of Norwayne girls basketball.”
