Kauai Fire Department firefighters and crews from the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife, continue to respond to a brush fire in Kokee, near the junction of Kokee Road and Waimea Canyon Drive, according to a news release Wednesday evening.
KFD crews cleared the scene around 6 p.m. Wednesday, and DOFAW crews remained on the scene until sundown, resuming operations Thursday morning. KFD remains on standby, if needed.
Waimea Canyon Drive and Kokee Road are now open.
Officials said the fire is about 70% contained and is located within a valley.
The County of Kauai said there are no threats to structures and no injuries have been reported. The fire was first reported at 6 a.m. Wednesday and estimates have the fire size at 2 acres.
According to a news release from the County of Kauai Wednesday afternoon, KFD has turned over the incident to state officials. KFD personnel continue to assist the DOFAW crews.
On Wednsday, state officials closed Waimea Canyon Drive from Panini Place to Kokee Road junction. Kokee Road, near mile marker 7, was also closed to traffic. The public was advised to avoid the area.
Crews from the Hanapepe and Waimea fire stations, Rescue 3, Tender 1, Air 1, the Department of Public Works, the Kauai Police Department, state officials and the on-duty Battalion Chief responded to the incident.
The Kauai Emergency Management Agency is also monitoring the fire.
