AKRON, Ohio — Akron Mayor Shammas Malik gave an update on Monday on the oil reported in the Little Cuyahoga River over the weekend.
An anonymous caller reported the oil on Saturday afternoon near the intersection of E. Market St. and Massillon Road. The Akron Fire Department, a hazmat team and the EPA were monitoring the incident and the scene on Sunday.
The EPA said no drinking water, wildlife or aquatic life were threatened by the incident.
In a post on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter, Malik said the release was traced to a vacant industrial building. The spill was estimated to be less than 100 gallons in volume, and a portion made it into a storm drain which flowed into the river.
The EPA placed containment measures to prevent the sheen from moving downstream.
"Ohio EPA continues to work with the local fire department and the responsible party," Malik's post said.
