DAYTON, Ohio — Five Rivers Metroparks is hosting a ballot for the name of the newest animal ambassador, a screech owl.
The owl was rescued by Animal Care Alliance in Richmond, Indiana, had incurable injuries to her left eye and eventually had to have it removed. The parks said in a statement that the owl is fully flighted and adjusting to her new enclosure at at Germantown MetroPark where she is taken of by education staff and volunteers.
She hatched last year, making her a second-year bird. Once settled a bit more, she will join classrooms and meet park visitors.
The parks have been accepting name suggestions and have narrowed the vote down to five options for the owl: Adena, Aurora, Gem, Juniper and Scout.
"She is still a little wild yet but is calm and curious when on the hand and will be a beautiful addition to our education program," the parks said.
Voting will remain open until March 7.
