HILLVIEW, Ky. — Miles away from southeastern Kentucky’s tornado devastation, some Kentuckians rallied to support survivors. In Hillview, The Roll Call Foundation gathered donations to help those in Laurel and Pulaski Counties.
On Tuesday, volunteers with The Roll Call Foundation loaded up donations for tornado survivors.
“We got a lot,” Angela Brocato-Skaggs, volunteer with The Roll Call Foundation, said when a truck of donations pulled up.
Besides the pickup truck bed full of dog food, the trailer was full of just about anything you can think of.
“Plenty of tarps because they said that was one of their main things they needed was tarps. We have paper towels, we have hygiene products, so a little bit of everything,” Brocato-Skaggs said.
The nonprofit was started by three veterans about four years ago. Its mission is to help someone every single day. In 2024, The Roll Call Foundation helped Brocato-Skaggs’ father, a Korean War veteran.
“We had contacted Don, and he helped me with my dad’s VA to make sure he had all the benefits at the end of his life, and getting his military burial,” she said.
The help was so meaningful to Brocato-Skaggs that she’s been volunteering with the foundation ever since.
“It’s how I was raised. You help others, no questions asked,” Brocato-Skaggs said.
On Monday, May 19, the foundation requested donations for storm survivors. In a matter of hours, the trailer was full of roughly $6,000 in resources.
“I was in tears. I’m not going to lie about it. I was in tears several times yesterday and this morning,” said Don Barbiea, co-founder of The Roll Call Foundation.
The donations are not only important for those dealing with the devastation, but also for the co-founders who made it all happen.
“Our mental health check every day is helping people. When we’re helping people, he’s healthier, I’m healthier,” Barbiea said.
The nonprofit said it will collect more donations depending on the needs of survivors.
“This is everything we’ve got, which has been phenomenal. We couldn’t have asked for a better collection,” Brocato-Skaggs said.
The trailer was already on its way to southeastern Kentucky Tuesday Morning.
The Roll Call Foundation collected donations for the last few natural disasters in the area, including for hurricane Helene victims in North Carolina and flood victims in Shepherdsville.
