The County of Hawaii Civil Defense Agency will host a “Keanakolu Summit” event recognizing the valuable ways amateur radio operators can help strengthen communities in the face of potential hazards such as hurricanes or wildfires.
The June 12 event will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Aunty Sally Kaleohano’s Luau Hale at 799 Piilani Street in Hilo to provide networking opportunities, valuable information and a platform to enhance the Civil Defense Auxiliary Communications Service. All amateur radio operators, whether returning partners or new to ACS, are welcome at the event. Lunch will be provided.
When hurricanes, wildfires or other emergencies disrupt communications, disable phones or damage the electrical power grid, the County of Hawaii ACS plays a critical role in sharing vital information across the island.
"They say, 'when all else fails, amateur radio works,' and ham radio operators are essential for community resilience throughout Hawaii Island," said Mayor Kimo Alameda in a release. "The start of the hurricane season is an excellent time to strengthen the engagement with our island’s amateur radio operators."
Gov. Josh Green declared June 2025 as Amateur Radio Month throughout the state, aligning with the start of hurricane season, which runs from June 1 through November 30. Alameda has also proclaimed June as Amateur Radio Month in Hawaii County to reinforce this important initiative across the island.
“It’s crucial to share credible, reliable information to protect people during an emergency situation,” said Civil Defense Administrator Talmadge Magno. “Our partnership with amateur radio operators helps to make that happen, and we’re grateful for their support.”
An RSVP is required by Monday, June 9 to attend the summit. Those interested can call 808-935-0031 or email civildefense@hawaiicounty.gov.
