COLUMBUS, Ohio — Visitors to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium will soon have a new, 14-acre region to explore in the North America Trek.
The new area will be open to the public ion May 23, the zoo shared in a social media post.
“Inspired by the iconic scenery of North America’s national parks, North America Trek invites you to explore immersive environments where animals such as black bears explore, river otters splash, bald eagles perch, and Mexican wolves roam their rugged terrain,” the post reads. “This transformation revitalizes the Zoo’s oldest region, originally opened in 1985, into a conservation-focused destination filled with naturalistic design, winding trails, and unforgettable views—all created with animal wellbeing at the heart of every design.”
There will be a community dedication ceremony at 10 a.m. on May 23.
Included with the new region is the Ohio Center for Wildlife Conservation, “a hub spotlighting the Zoo’s vital conservation work with endangered native species.”
The zoo does caution that the main experience in this region is complete but that some of the aviaries still need some finishing touches. They also note that some of the animals may take some time to get used to their new spaces and may not be outside and visible quite as much at first.
Observable wildlife in this region will include wolves, river otters, bald eagles and more.
