St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch cut the ribbon at the grand opening ceremony on Wednesday, along with other city and county leaders, and the developer of the complex, Gravel Road Partners.

“Bayou Court is 60 units, all of these units are identical, they’re all two-bedroom, two-bath,” said Tyler Herbert, a founding partner of Gravel Road Partners.

Welch credits the partnership between the city and county, and developer, for making this complex possible.

“This took a combination of the county putting in $2.8 million, and the city putting in a like amount, and a private developer making the decision to not try to maximize profits here," Welch said. "They intentionally made this affordable, knowing in our city we need affordable housing for our teachers, our cops, the folks who work for the city and others who make our city work."

Welch toured one of the models himself.

“It’s beautiful, sustainable, it’s housing that any of us would be comfortable living in or having our loved ones live in," he said.

The mayor said this is just the beginning — you can expect to see a lot more affordable housing being built here in St. Pete in the near future.

They have already leased 21 units at Bayou Court Apartments. There are 60 units total with a designated number of units for several different income ranges, all based on the area’s median income.
