LEWISTON -- Saint Mary’s Nutrition Center has a new name after 26 years.
The organization is now called Gather to Grow, paying homage to their mission of growing and providing fresh, affordable food for the community, according to the organization’s website.
The name comes more than a year after the Nutrition Center announced that it would separate from Saint Mary’s Health Systems. The organization separated from Saint Mary’s to “ensure the core work of the Nutrition Center continues without disruption” and be responsive to the needs of the community, according to Kirsten Walker, executive director of Gather to Grow.
Gather to Grow is one of the largest grocery-style food pantries in Maine, according to Walker. It serves over 500 households a week and distributed more than 650,000 pounds of food last year.
The organization will continue to operate its food pantry at 208 Bates St. in Lewiston. It also supports urban gardening and hosts community meals throughout the year, according to the organization’s website.
