The Department of Health canceled the Brown Water Advisory for Sunset Beach Wednesday afternoon.
The Hawaii Department of Health had issued a Brown Water Advisory for Oahu’s Sunset Beach on Tuesday. Beachgoers were advised to stay out of the water for at least 48 to 72 hours after the rain has stopped and the beach has received full sunshine, according to a news release.
Following storm or heavy rain, nearshore waters will appear brown or murky and may contain “higher than normal pollutant levels,” according to DOH.
The public is also advised to avoid swimming, wading in or drinking water from any freshwater streams or pond to prevent leptospirosis, a bacterial infection caused by the Leptospira bacteria.
DOH advises, “If the water is brown, turn around.”
