In the Queensbridge Houses in Astoria, an attack by a dog inside one apartment left a baby girl dead and neighbors speechless.

Just after 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, police were called to an apartment inside the building where a 1-month-old girl was allegedly mauled by what sources describe as a puppy — either a German Shepard or pit bull.

Those same sources say the animal was chewing the infant’s face. Neighbors say they’re still trying to process what happened and what could have been done to prevent it.

“People are fast to put blame. What happened? How could we have helped?” neighbor Stephanie Chauncey said.

The investigation is still unfolding. Police have not confirmed the breed or if the dog was legally allowed in the building.

“It’s pretty quiet around here today. I think that’s because of that,” neighbor Enyer Cabrera said.

The usual sounds of daily life have faded, replaced by quiet conversations and a sense of loss.

“Everybody in the community is really close around here, so we all give our prayers and do what we can,” Cabrera said.
