The operation is perhaps the largest immigration raid yet under the administrations of President Donald Trump and Gov. Ron DeSantis. The morning raid lasted hours, at a construction site blocks away from Florida State University.

“Police surrounded the whole building, all the corners, and then they started barging in and telling people to show your papers…,” said Leonardo Garcia, an onsite construction worker. “Some people started to run away, and they just tackled them to the ground like nothing.”

Police escorted the more the migrants onto vans and transported them to nearby holding facilitates, including the Leon County Jail. Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed the operation to Spectrum News, though provided no further details.

“U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigation served multiple search warrants as part of an ongoing investigation in the Tallahassee region,” said ICE spokesperson Mike Meares.

Homeland Security says the undocumented migrants entered the U.S. from a variety of countries. Among them: Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Colombia and Honduras.

“I know a few of them,” added Garcia, a Tallahassee native. “One of them was my uncle. He just got here a couple of years ago on his work permit and they just took him.”

DeSantis in February partnered with the federal government to deputize local law enforcement to act duly as immigration enforcement officers too. The Florida Highway Patrol assisted in the raid, adding to the large police presence in the College Town area of Tallahassee near Doak Campbell Stadium.

“State law enforcement making a huge impact on immigration enforcement efforts,” posted DeSantis on X. “Major bust in Tallahassee!”
