PALM BAY, Fla. — Mountain biking might not seem like an activity to do in Florida. After all, the highest natural point in the state is at 345 feet located at Britton Hill in north Florida.
However, riders in Palm Bay say that you don’t need mountains to go mountain biking.
The Grapefruit Trails, at 1414 Norbert Road NE in Palm Bay, is the perfect example of how combining natural trails, jumps and even wooden structures create a one-of-a-kind riding experience.
Jason Stroble, vice president of Brevard Mountain Bike Association, believes the area is a hidden gem for riders.
“There’s lots of features and things that you don’t see in other bike parks in other parts of the country, or even other parts of Florida,” said Stroble.
Stroble and a team of other association members have worked directly with the city of Palm Bay and Brevard County over the years to help build and maintain the trails of 9.6 acres crafted specifically for riding & walking.
“We’ve carefully crafted the trails to be something for everyone. From somebody who’s never been on a trail before to an absolute professional,” said Stroble.
A 2.5-mile main loop circles the parameter of the area and the freeride park is built from a network of lines, all of which contain various ride options.
Parts of the Grapefruit Trails can be described as a demanding course that includes every aspect of BMX trails, such as jumps, dips, wooden structures, canals, step-ups, and tabletops.
Longtime Pro BMX rider Mark Mulville comes to the Grapefruit Trails because of the variety of runs.
“You could have very minimal bike skills and come here, or you can be a professional and come here, and either way, you’re going to find something good to ride,” said Mulville.
For those less adventurous, there are smooth cut trails that include a landscape with the look and feel of old Florida.
“It’s good fun for the whole family. Anybody from kids to grandpas to grandmas can be out here riding with their families,” said Stroble.
The Grapefruit Trails are open from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day, and are free.
