The “Piano Man” singer has been diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus, or NPH, a condition in which fluid buildup inside or around the brain disrupts brain function.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, it can affect thinking, concentration, memory, movement and more. The symptoms may resemble dementia, but NPH is sometimes reversible, a page on the medical center’s website says.
NPH is most common in people over age 65 and affects about 8.4 million people over the age of 80 worldwide, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
“This condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance,” the statement by Joel’s team said. “Under his doctor’s instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period.”
Joel, 76, is thankful for the excellent medical care he is receiving and for the support from his fans and "looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage," the statement added.
“I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding,” Joel said in the statement.
The canceled shows include stops in:
